Module 2: What is Phenomena-Driven Instruction?

Objectives: Understand what phenomena-driven instruction is and how to incorporate it into teaching practice. Learn strategies and explore tools and resources to help develop and deliver phenomena-driven instruction.

EQ: How might the shift to phenomena-driven instruction enable us to be more culturally responsive?

Phenomena serve as a central component of learning. Students are curious about the phenomenon and are compelled to explain it. Students engage with the phenomenon in ways that develop an understanding of targeted DCIs, SEPs, and CCCs.

Task 1

Rethink a current instructional unit. Choose a unit that you would like to shift to phenomena-driven. Using the criteria from the resources provided below, identify a phenomenon that will provide a common entry point for all students.

Task 2

Design a culturally responsive learning sequence with 5 activities. Use the model sequence below as a guide. Include the specific SEP for each activity and at least one culturally responsive activity.
