Why Formative Assessment?

Objectives: Dig into the theory and practice of formative assessment. Explore how effective formative assessments lead to increased student engagement and deeper learning for all students

Essential Question: How might effective formative assessments facilitate culturally responsive learning spaces?

Formative assessments are an important tool for teachers because they provide ongoing feedback about student learning and help teachers adjust their instruction in real-time. Formative assessments allow teachers to identify misunderstandings and misconceptions early on, so they can address them before they become more deeply ingrained. This can save time and effort in the long run, as it is much easier to correct misunderstandings before they become ingrained habits.

Formative assessments also have the added benefit of helping students stay engaged in their learning. When students are able to see how they are progressing and where they need to improve, they are more motivated to continue learning. This can lead to better academic outcomes for students and a more positive learning experience overall.
